I just cannot fathom anyone NOT giving this book their highest rating! (Yeah, yeah, I know...different tastes.) This one grabbed a hold of me and wouldn't let me go. It seriously pulled at my heartstrings. It was a hard book to read, but so worthwhile. So many scenes made me sob! Gabriel was one of the most unique characters I've ever come across in a historical romance. He was forced into prostitution as a child, and he used cutting in an attempt to feel in control. Sarah was a wonderful heroine, her love helping him overcome his tragic past. When they got separated, it just about killed me! But loves does conquer all! After I get this book back from a friend, it's going on my keeper shelf.

The first two thirds of this book rate 5 stars. The final third, 3. Given the premise of a hero, victimized as a child, who is a highly successful courtesan, I was prepared for lurid and prepared to be disgusted. Far from it. This story is about healing, love and compassion. The step by step construction of the love relationship is brilliantly done. The characters are fully developed. Secondary characters are lovingly sketched out (I count at least four future heroes if not five). Readers are drawn in and held by the story even after the hero and heroine are separated by circumstances.
(Spoiler coming. Stop here if that worries you)
The story of Gabrial's captivity is well done if long. Once he escapes, however, his adventures before he finally faces Sarah go on much too long and distract from the main plot far too much. His angst is so belabored that the ultimate reconciliation falls emotionally flat. It seems glib. Also, the final passages give short shrift to his relationship with other characters and the ending is abrupt. The only five star scene after he escapes is the one in which Valmont finds them playing music. That piece is very well done.
The hero, Gabriel is definitely different and is the standout of this book. He is probably the most unique hero I've read, at least in quite some time. He's a prostitute for both men and women. He was forced as a child and did at least once, try to run away. But he was a man full grown and still whoring, wearing eye make-up and working in a brothel when he meets the heroine. Granted, he says he stayed to protect the boy but... I don't know. I think he actually liked and got sexual gratification from going at it with both men and women. He's the pretty boy type in that Prince or George Michaels kind of way. Over sexed at times and totally nonsexual at others. Cold as ice, mean and cruel as only pretty boys trying to prove their manhood can be... However, an extremely smart and resourceful man who created his own ways of dealing with life. Without a doubt, a tortured soul and yet able to contain his emotions to the point of not really having any. Self mutilating on occasion to verify his existence proved he really did have some serious issues. I don't know... At times I actually hated him for his pure cruelty. I really didn't feel a great attraction for him either, as I do my other five star heroes but that is probably because I'm just not attracted to the pretty boy, partially feminine type. However his character brought out more emotion from me then I felt in a long time from any hero. He is most definitely an unforgettable character.
The heroine was also original and unique. I liked her a lot because at times she wouldn't say what you would expect but would say things so offbeat and unexpected that it made me laugh at times. Amazing how real she seemed. Not your typical heroine, she would sometimes dress as a man, not because she was masculine but because she truly didn't give a sha-oot what people thought. As far as she was concerned, the clothes were comfortable and practical for her so she didn't give it a second thought. She seemed to me like an "I'm going to save the world and get out of my way while I do it" kind of woman. Although she spoke her mind, amazingly she seemed to give what she said plenty of thought. Bold and yet compassionate and displaying a wry sense of humor, she truly seemed unafraid of anything. You can kind of see why Gabriel (a man in such control of his emotions, falls so deeply in love with her) Some writers try to make their heroine out to be independent minded however it just comes off as a bit contrived. Kudos to J.J. for digging deep and making this character multi-dimensional and very real.
Kudos also because although this is her first book, she seems a seasoned writer. Not only did she give her main characters well developed personalities but her secondarys, Ross, Davey, Jacques and even that young earl were well thought out personalities with little quirks added in that set them apart. They were vibrant and inimitable and at times, leaped off the pages. The plot/storyline however at times, at least the pace and flow of it, seemed inconsistent. Like she kind of made it up as she went along. I think she came up with the basic idea of the story and then filled in the blanks, paying more attention to and assuming that her well developed characters would disguise any weaknesses in the pace and timing of the plot. The beginning and towards the end of the book were riveting, much better than the middle which at times dragged on a bit. However she is a good writer who obviously takes pains not be like other romance writers. Kudos again. She has a good handle on her settings and time periods which is extremely important. RESEARCH AUTHORS! You sense that this is a writer who just loves to write and this bodes well for her future. I sincerely hope she keeps that. So many writers seem to lose their love of it and it shows in there later works (John Grisham, Johanna Lindsey, etc.) Anyway, overall a really good book with great well developed characters.
Historical fiction is, by far, my favorite genre as I find that there is no more fun and interesting way to learn about history than through the pages of a well-written novel. Author Judith James is one that I keep returning to for this pleasure and I so enjoyed the journey that she took me on with "Broken Wing".
Set in 18th century France, this is the story of Gabriel St. Croix, who was abandoned as a child and forced to work as a prostitute in a Parisian brothel. Never knowing love or affection growing up, he seems to find something deep within himself that makes him want to protect a young boy, Jaime, that has come into the home. This is where Sarah enters the picture. Jaime's sister, recently widowed, has been searching for her missing brother and crosses paths with Gabriel as she comes to Paris. This sets up both an epic love story and the circumstances under which Gabriel can begin to be freed, both literally and figuratively.
There wasn't much not to love about this story. The setting and the time period were ideal for such a tale and it was clear that James does her research very thoroughly, which is no small task. I also found the characters to be flawed in a way that made them human and very relatable for me. Much of the intensity reminded me of Gabaldon's Jaime and Claire. This was another well written historical romance from James that I thoroughly enjoyed and I found it well deserving of the praise already given to it. Well done.
