Silver Brumby Daughter Elyne Mitchell 9780006930136 Books Reviews

Those human types seem to think that having horses of a rare color is worth a fair bit of cash. They have been trying to catch the Silver brumby for a while, and now that he has offspring, they have another target.

Lucky for him that he has a secret hideout in the bush a la Captain Starlight in Robbery Under Arms.
I have read the "Silver Brumby's" series since I was a child and every few years I re-read the whole series as an adult. I am 42 now! ) I love the Silver Brumby's daughter as it shows the bond between Thowra, the silver stallion and his beautiful silver daughter, Kunama who is hunted as much as her father is for her beautiful shiny coat. She is captured; but can Thowra rescue her from the grasp of men? Fantastic book!

I highly recommend the whole series to any one who loves horses, young or old. You can start in the series where you want, but I recommend starting with the Silver Brumby, as this is the first book and the story tells of the birth of a tiny silver colt being born on a stormy hostile night and how he and his half-brother Storm grow, evade being captured by man who longs to own the beautiful silver horses, how they fight for the right to have a herd, how he meets Kunama's mother, and how he fights for the right for supremacy in the hostile Snowy mountains. Excellent all around! Just writing this makes me want to read the series again for the 100th time!! )
This is the second in the classic series about the wild horses of south-east Australia. In my view it's the best of them all.
Kunama is a silver and white filly (her name means snow) kicking up her heels in the snowy mountains with her father Thowra (meaning wind) at the start of the book. As the seasons progress she meets other young colts and fillies and her stunning looks gain the unwanted attention of a big burly colt Spear. Kunama prefers a black colt Tambo, a pure racehorse running wild. Wallabies, mopokes, wombats and galahs populate the busy Australian spring. But all this pales before the threat of capture by humans who at that time (though not now) were permitted to graze cattle and rope wild horses during the summer.
Kunama has to stay hidden away in a secret valley but like any teenage girl she wants to get out and meet her friends - until she takes one chance too many and is roped by a man and boy who drag her back to the captivity escaped by her mother Golden. She has no way to escape and even if she did, other horses are on the mountains, including the unfriendly Spear.
Read as a horse story, the details are all correct; read as a metaphor it teaches young people some valuable lessons in a way they can relate to; read as a ripping adventure story, it can hardly be bettered. I read this more times than I can remember and the lyrical beauty of the writing would still engage me today.
Ms Mitchell wrote many books about her life on an outback station and skiing in the mountains. The first four are the best of this series; the later books have fewer characters and simpler stories.
This was early published as The Snow Filly.
Very interesting and the story hooks you in straight away I couldn't put my kindle down. Mum was very happy to see me so into a story
Another gem from Elyne Mitchell suitable for children who are captivated by masterful story telling continues the silver brumby saga
Captures the reality of how a rare and beatiful wild horse must deal not only with the danger of capture by humans, but also with overcoming the dangers of living free in the wilds of Southern Australia.
