There is no Beatle researcher more thorough and careful in his work than Mark Lewisohn. He is also a tireless researcher, speaking with anyone who knew or worked with the Beatles that will allow him to interview them.
Some of the information in this book updates previous information, even in Lewisohn's books, and some has been superseded by Lewisohn's exhaustively researched Tune In, volume 1 of a 3 volume work that Lewisohn is currently writing. It's ironic that as years go by, we get better information and a clearer picture of events than was available at the time in which they took place. Mr. Lewisohn has added a great deal to the documentation of the Beatles' story and legacy, and this book is a marvelous contribution.
Looking at what they did day to day may sound boring and antiseptic - indeed, I didn't read it for years because that was my assumption - but this book pulled me in and becomes a fascinating way of looking at the Beatles' career. It's also an invaluable resource for anyone wanting clear timelines for projects and illustrates their artistic development with great effectiveness.

Thanks you for this treasure.
I was expecting a soft cover book so when a hardcover book turned up i was exceedingly happy.
The book itself is a beatle enthuiasts dream.
Mark Lewisohns wit and insight enliven the era to an amazing degree.
The present day is so depressing music and art wise that i find myself imersing myself more and more in the past.
I am lucky to have been there as the young ones of today will have no such luxury in future.
what a barren future - yuck!
It is a shame because as has been said that the past had bad technology but great music today is the opposite.
The beatles will last forever.
i will treaure this book so long as live in the hope that what once was will be again.
The book gives an excellently detailed summary of the Beatles professional lives from the time John first met Paul to the final recording and overdubbing of "I Me Mine" from the Get Back/Let It Be sessions. Reading this makes you wonder exactly how they found the time to even think about writing their music, what with everything that was going on around them. For those who don't know, Lewisohn is currently working on a multi-volume Beatle biography.

The book was bought used at an extremely reasonable price and arrived in excellent condition. It will make a nice gift to one of my fellow Beatlemaniacs.
I borrowed The Complete Beatles Chronicle from the library hoping to get more info on the making of the White Album (my favorite). But, because of how well the book is written, I wound up starting from page one.

This book is interesting because it doesn't miss the big picture. At the beginning of each year is a concise chronicle of what happen that year and its significance. One needn't get bogged down in the details. Just read the first few pages of each chapter for a good overview.

But, if you read the whole account, you'll discover the true genius of the four lads from Liverpool and how they somehow managed to create high-quality songs in between appearances on TV shows, sitting in on radio broadcasts, making movies, going on far-flung concert tours and dealing with mobs of desperate Beatlemaniacs.

Some of this data must be conjecture (even though it's not presented as such). For example, unless it was revealed in an interview, how would the author know that Billy Preston was brought into the Get Back sessions in order to break the tension within the group.

Still, it's an easy read filled with facts. I must now buy this book. So should you.

Extremely comprehensive but it reads like a log book. There are icons which let you know what the event is about like recording, live, television, etc. Not a complete overview of how they recorded, it might say that they recorded Johns vocals through a Leslie speaker but it doesn't give detailed accounts of instruments used, how this amp was mic'd, who played what on every song or things like that. So if your looking for a detailed account of everything the Beatles did from the beginning to the end this is your book, don't expect to read this and then record in the fashion of Abbey Road studios if that is your idea. I really enjoyed it.
What a great book! Mark Lewisohn is perhaps the greatest living expert on The Beatles. He has written a number of interesting, compelling, highly researched and entertaining books. (Currently the first volume of his remarkable trilogy and the definitive Beatles biography," All These Years - Vol. 1 Tune In" is out. Can't wait for volumes two and three.) This book presents what The Beatles did everyday they were a band. Essential reading for fans. There is much revealing information in this wonderful book. I highly recommend it, as well as all of Lewisohn's books.
